Meet Our Honorees
John Sterling is a well-known American retired sportscaster, most famous for his long tenure as the radio play-by-play announcer for the New York Yankees. Born on July 4, 1938, in Manhattan, New York, Sterling’s broadcasting career began in the 1970s and he became the Yankees’ lead announcer in 1989. After 5,631 games behind the microphone for Yankees radio broadcasts, Sterling said farewell in April 2024.
Sterling is recognized for his unique and colorful style of calling games, particularly his personalized home run calls for each player. His signature phrases, such as “It is high, it is far, it is gone!” and “Ballgame over! Yankees win! Thuuuuh Yankees win!” have endeared him to fans and made his broadcasts a distinctive part of the Yankees’ experience.
Before joining the Yankees, Sterling worked in various sports, including play-by-play for the NBA’s New Jersey Nets and Atlanta Braves. Over his career, he has gained a reputation for his enthusiasm and dedication, calling over 5,000 consecutive Yankees games before missing his first in 2019. Even into his 80s, Sterling remains an iconic voice in baseball broadcasting, continuing to deliver high-energy commentary on Yankees games.
Sterling is the proud father of 4 children and resides in New Jersey.

Fred Brenowitz, president of WeDesignNY/Acisco, was born in Brooklyn, New York, where his parents developed a successful business in the 1950s, purchasing land for shopping centers, farmers markets, and homes. This experience profoundly shaped Fred’s future career.
A standout swimmer at James Madison High School, Fred graduated in 1966 and continued swimming at the University of Miami. His education was interrupted when he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving at Parris Island, Camp LeJeune, and Camp Pendleton as a Communications Wireman and Drown Proofing Swimming Instructor. Rising to the rank of Sergeant, Fred was honorably discharged in 1974.
After his father suffered a heart attack, Fred transferred to New York University and balanced multiple jobs, including teaching at Erasmus High School, where he developed a curriculum for non-native English speakers. He earned four teaching licenses and pursued a master’s degree at Brooklyn College.
Fred married Hannah Perel in 1976, raising two daughters, Heather and Meridith, and welcoming grandchildren Ryan, Ari, Gavin, and Lily.
Due to the NYC financial crisis in the late 1970s, Fred transitioned to business, founding Acisco, Inc. Originally focused on office supplies, he expanded the company into office renovations, commercial flooring, and interior/exterior glass work. Fred later added a design division, operating from a 10,000 sq. ft. showroom, working alongside his daughter, Meridith.
Fred’s dedication to his family, community, and country continues to define his life and career.
