The People of Life’s WORC – Al Funny

Feb 6, 2021

Counting my steps as I travel along this path to my destination.

Admiring my past through my cries, smiles & laughs.

The understanding I had to grasp to continue to gain laps throughout my life marathon.

Competing to find my place within this human race, so with each step I’m picking up my pace.

My eyes tunnel vision on the finish line so I could allow this little light of mine to shine.

By Al Funny, Life’s WORC Day Habilitation Supervisor

Al Funny has been a member of Life’s WORC and its Family Center for Autism team since 2016. He began with us as a one-on-one support for a young man in our programs and was so influential to him and his family that he was a clear choice for Assistant Supervisor when the New Directions Day Habilitation was opened. He was quickly promoted to Supervisor, and now works with staff on behavior training and crisis management.

“Al has a unique compassion toward others that endears him to all who meet him,” says John Pfeifer, Assistant Executive Director of Residential Services. “Within that compassion is a calming confidence that makes you feel safe and welcomed. These skills are innate to Al, and they are what make him an exceptional professional when supporting others.”

As you can see above, Al is also a talented poet, who writes and performs his poetry around the Greater New York area.

Prior to joining Life’s WORC, Al was a Crisis Specialist, which he credits for his patience and level of understanding for the people we support in all situations. Al is dedicated to the men and women in our programs and enjoys building relationships with them and helping them develop coping methods for their own times of need. He has also developed close relationships with his colleagues and is well liked and respected by not just the people he works with, but the people he supports and their families.

We thank Al for his continued dedication to Life’s WORC and our mission, as well as the contributions he has made with his poetry and for sharing his passion with us.

In honor of the 50th Anniversary of Life’s WORC, we will be sharing the stories, people and events that have made Life’s WORC the organization it is today, along with our goals and vision for the future. Thank you for celebrating with us!
